China has been consistently flouting WTO commitments since it joined in 2001, pursuing mercantilist policies that have generated large trade surpluses and benefited from forced tech transfers/joint ventures and IP theft.

It closes or heavily restricts market access to foreign firms (especially in certain sectors), all the while artificially making its exports competitive and demanding full access to foreign markets.

God forbid the US is finally trying to rectify this state of affairs and now there are Western journos calling for it to be kicked out of the WTO.

Why is it that internationalism has always ended up with asymmetric results for the West? It’s true of every supranational organization - the UN, the WHO, the WTO.

People are wondering nowadays: what exactly happened to the “liberal world order?”

Well you failed to gate-keep the liberal world order. You let the illiberal into the order. That’s what happened.
